Why Every Parent Should Encourage Their Child's Participation in Sports

More than just a game

In this modern age, where technology plays such a huge part in our world, it is of little surprise that the mobile device has become a fixture in our daily lives. This is especially so for the youth of today, who have been exposed to these devices at such a young age. Consequently, the emphasis on physical activity has never been more crucial. It is through the joy of sport that children not only strengthen their bodies but also forge the character and intellect that will carry them far in life.

Without any doubt, it is common knowledge that sports enhances the human body. The National Library of Medicine recommends at least 6o minutes of physical activity for children and youths ages between six to seventeen years. Such is essential, not only for the development of muscles, skeletal structure, and the nervous system, but also for maintaining a healthy weight.

Aside from the physical benefits of sports, the influence of athletic activity is crucial for playing a role in a child’s academic development. According to worldairco.org.logo, it sharpens the mind, enhancing one’s concentration, memory, and decision-making capabilities.

Participation in sports stimulates the release of a certain brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein most vital for the flourishing of brain cells, which, in turn, is linked to improved memory.

Sports also help to stimulate the release of dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine hormones. These hormones work to improve the ability to maintain attention.

Lastly, sports aid in making decisions. Athletes are always required to make swift, strategic decisions in a fast-paced and competitive environment. Individuals learn to navigate obstacles and plan their course with precision.

Beyond sharpening the mind, sports also play a vital role in a child’s social development.

On the social front, sports imparts a valuable lesson: coping with failure. Children learn to cope with failure, understanding that setbacks are but temporary. They learn to lose, and rise again from their setbacks. Such experiences are important for a child to develop the resilience to accept defeat and persevere nonetheless, which is an essential quality for success in life.

Additionally, it is a fact that sports do more than simply engage the body — they also refine the art of communication. Sports activities which take place in a team setting exposes children to various cultures and personalities. This teaches our young athletes to seek common grounds with someone who, at first glance, may seem so different from them. Over time, this nurtures the skill to understand and collaborate with those who have went through their own fair share of experiences, and who sees the world through a different lens.

In conclusion, the benefits of sports extend far beyond physical health. They touch upon the mental, academic, and social spheres of a child’s development, shaping well-rounded individuals equipped for the challenges of the future.

This is why at Gummy Cove Student Care, we prioritize incorporating sports into our weekly schedule, providing our Gummy students with the chance to recharge and engage in physical activity to support their overall well-being.
